Shifting Sands
Navigating a Changing World
By Caroline Phipps
Our world is changing at a dizzying pace. In just a few months, the establishments, structures, organizations, and environments we rely on for safety and stability have shifted before our very eyes. Many of us feel lost, and our collective fuse has grown so short that anger, irritability, frustration, and grief are spilling over, contaminating everything around us.
To navigate this constantly changing landscape effectively, without succumbing to feelings of overwhelm and darkness, we need to make some personal shifts ourselves.
The customs of ancient tribes, such as the Bedouins, can provide inspiration and guidance for this volatile journey we’ve unexpectedly embarked upon. Living in harmony with the seemingly harsh desert environment, they possess centuries of wisdom about navigating a world that constantly shifts beneath their feet.
Firstly, they don’t waste time and energy searching for the paths or hills that existed yesterday. They understand that the world as they knew it no longer exists. Instead, they focus on engaging with whatever is presented to them in real-time, concentrating solely on the new structure that is emerging rather than dwelling on what has been lost.
Secondly, like the ancient mariners, they look up to the heavens. The stars serve as a celestial guidebook, revealing exactly where they are and the direction they should take. The way forward is as clear as the night sky.
By stepping into this present moment and acknowledging our reliance on powers and systems far greater than we can conceive, we gain much-needed guidance for dealing with the challenges of today’s new reality.
When we attempt to navigate back to old paths, dwelling on how things “should” be and blaming everything and everyone for our discomfort, we only find ourselves blindsided and unprepared. Instead, by shifting our focus to managing what presents itself to us, we can start solving problems and moving forward in creative ways.
Dramatic periods of change can destroy opportunities and alter landscapes, but they also create new ones. Previously unthought-of openings, events, and unlikely synchronicities continually arise. Our task now is to recognize, embrace, and begin co-creating the world we desire. While remnants of our previous lives still exist, this new world is uncharted and dynamic. As pioneers, let’s rise to the challenge and be every bit as dynamic as we work to shape the world for future generations.
